Both can cultivate relationships and preserve appearances. Broker is more willing to stop once the gain is secured; Smiler may record an offense as a separate outstanding debt. Their easiest mistake is assuming that a settled transaction also settles the grievance.
How they see each other
Broker may take Smiler’s continued friendliness as proof that the matter is over, without noticing that Smiler is still waiting for redress.
Smiler may see Broker’s timely decision to cut losses as caring only about money, not harm, and dismiss the apology as sales talk.
An alliance
With a difficult client, Broker rearranges incentives to get the project delivered, while Smiler keeps smiling and remembers every detail of the breach.
A rivalry
Broker declares the account settled, but Smiler quietly recoups the old debt in the next collaboration. When Broker notices, Broker withdraws every referral.
A close bond
As the evening banquet ends, Broker arrives with cold tea and acknowledges the hurtful remark. Smiler burns the grudge note in front of Broker, then tops up the cup with hot water.

Settle financial loss separately from emotional offense. After agreeing on one clear remedy, neither party may use a new incident to revive the old debt.
