2. He Remembered
Puppet Master remembers Tyrant once mentioning sea-salt crackers and saves him a pack. Tyrant enjoys a bite, then reaches for his phone to plan a return gift.
I saved you a pack of the sea-salt ones.
How did you know I like these?
You mentioned it last time.
I need to get him something in return.

3. The First Offer Is Blocked
Tyrant offers coffee, but Puppet Master already has one. In Tyrant's mind, he becomes a Balrog carefully carrying a cup, blocked on a bridge by Puppet Master as Gandalf.
Coffee? My treat.
I just got one. You really don't have to.
In Tyrant's head
You shall not pass!
Then this afternoon.

4. The Fellowship of Return Gifts
In Tyrant's mind, three Fellowship versions of him solemnly offer coffee, milk tea, and lemon tea. In reality, he asks Puppet Master to pick one drink on his phone.
In Tyrant's head
You have my coffee.
And my milk tea.
And my lemon tea!
Pick one of these three.
Three o'clock. Milk tea. Thirty percent sugar.

5. It Could Have Ended There
At three, Puppet Master accepts the milk tea and thanks Tyrant. Tyrant is leaving when Puppet Master promises to save him another snack sometime; Tyrant stops in his tracks.
3:00 p.m.
Yours.
Thanks!
Next time I find something good, I'll save you some.
If I stop at one drink, he'll dare do it again.

6. One More Show of Force
In Tyrant's mind, the White City's gates are already open, yet he orders an army to keep pushing a wolf-headed battering ram forward: his return favor must be intimidating.
In Tyrant's head
A thank-you must be a deterrent.
GROND! GROND!

7. Finding His Preference
Puppet Master says he cannot eat anything sweet. Tyrant learns he likes savory snacks without spice and buys him a small pack of plain seaweed rice crackers. Accepting it, Puppet Master privately thinks, “Just as planned.”
I'll add a slice of cake.
I really can't eat anything sweet now.
What about something savory?
Savory's fine. Nothing spicy.
Savory, not spicy. Weak spot found.

Take this too.

8. Victory, Apparently
In Tyrant's mind, a towering fiery eye with Puppet Master's blue brow collapses with its fortress. Tyrant stands with arms crossed, convinced the extra rice crackers have won him total victory.
In Tyrant's head
Let's see if you dare do it again.

9. His Next Move
Puppet Master suggests they keep buying sea-salt and seaweed snacks to trade. Tyrant's imagined triumph freezes. “You're doing it again?” he asks.
Then from now on, I'll get the sea-salt ones, you get the seaweed ones, and we'll trade.

10. Why Rush to Repay a Kindness?
A knowledge page uses coffee and everyday help to explain the pressure to repay kindness immediately. It suggests thanking first, judging future requests separately, and letting someone decline a return gift. A type is not the whole person.
16 Shades · The Tyrant's Everyday Dilemma
Someone Was Kind to Me.
Why the Rush to Repay?
A Familiar Little Dilemma
A friend buys you coffee, and you start planning how to return the favor;
someone lends a hand, and you want to make it up to them at once.
You're glad, yet it's hard to simply accept it.
Where Might That Discomfort Come From?
If you like being in control, owing someone for now can feel unsettling:
Will it be harder to say no later? Will they set the pace?
Wanting to return a kindness is normal. But if you only feel at ease once you've repaid it,
that kindness can start to feel like pressure.
Try This
1 Say Thanks First; Decide Later
“You remembered. Thanks.”
You don't have to choose a return gift on the spot.
2 Keep This Kindness Separate from the Next Request
Accepting this doesn't mean you must say yes next time;
if a request comes, you can decide then.
3 Offer to Return the Favor—and Let Them Decline
“My treat next time?”
If they say no, stop there. You needn't offer more.
Not every kindness needs to be settled on the spot.
A Small Reminder
16 Shades portrays negative or aggressive tendencies any of us may show. They are never the whole person. Noticing this side of ourselves can give us more understanding and more choice.

11. Save Those
Puppet Master asks whether he should stop saving snacks for Tyrant. Tyrant pulls the sea-salt crackers closer and stiffly says to keep saving that kind. Puppet Master is briefly surprised, then understands.
So I shouldn't save you any next time?

12. Next Time Can Wait
Puppet Master drops the idea of a fixed trade: he'll keep saving sea-salt crackers, while Tyrant can buy seaweed crackers only when he wants to. Tyrant stops at the Order Again button, puts down his phone, thanks him, and still clutches his snack like Gollum in his mind.
I'll keep saving you the sea-salt ones. The seaweed? Only if you feel like it.
