In shadow mode, an advantage may be written into the terms, dressing unilateral gain in procedural legitimacy. Clear negotiation and ordinary management are not in themselves exploitation.

Three moments you may recognize

• When negotiating terms, lays out the deadline, shares, and exchange requirements one by one
• When controlling allocation, builds personal rewards into rules that appear uniform
• Usually stops imposing consequences once the other person meets the stated conditions.

Strengths from the same roots

Sensitivity to costs, rules, and conditions of execution can help control budgets, clarify responsibility, and close deals, provided both sides can negotiate in earnest and reject unreasonable terms.

One step too far

When procedure serves only to force the weaker party's agreement, and ‘they signed’ substitutes for real choice, management slides into exploitation.

How nearby characters differ

Like the Raider, the Harvester applies direct pressure for material gain, but relies more on contracts, procedures, and plausible justification. Like the Collector, the Harvester uses process as pressure; the Harvester chiefly wants the payoff, while the Collector also imposes extra consequences on anyone who resists.
